GRESLEY ROAD SITE EARMARKED FOR TRAINING CENTRESome promising news is on the horizon for Basingstoke and its business community. Council surveyors and lawyers are working hard to sign a major deal with Network Rail, who have chosen the Gresley Road triangle site to the north of Basing View, to accommodate a new £10 million design and build regional training centre. The 8 acre Gresley Road site is Council owned, but offers a rare opportunity for a freehold purchase in a relatively central position. It has been marketed before now, and indeed was placed under offer following a tender process 2 or 3 years ago. However, the Basingstoke Council proved divided in opinion over whether or not the site was suitable for primarily residential use (including a high percentage of apartments). The intended sale subsequently fell apart.Terms have now been agreed for a sale of 6 acres to Network Rail, whose development scheme will also incorporate a new footbridge link from the site, over the London bound railway line, into Basing View, and thus to the town centre and railway station. Design details have not been released, but the facility is to be used for training and maintenance, project management, signalling and engineering design. The property is expected to accommodate up to 300 people at any one time.Timing details are awaited, indeed we suspect that the transaction is likely to be conditional upon planning consent. We are grateful to the Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council for this press announcement.
